Don't you ever write anything?

So everyone I know seems confused about what exactly I do. They open the paper or go to our website looking for my name, and can only find it on the masthead. Why? Because most of my job involves assigning, editing, and proofreading articles and blogs, as well as helping post to the blogs or website. Which means a lot of my work is behind the scenes, attached to the name of a writer who isn't me. But that doesn't mean I'm not writing at all -- I've been blogging (though obviously, not here), and I've been contributing occasional stories to the paper (particularly our special sections). So I've decided that in the interest of appeasing my readers, and in keeping with the original purpose of this blog as a clips archive, that I'll post links to my recent work. First: what I've been writing on the Guardian blogs. Print clips to come...

For Noise, our music blog, I've recently written about:

  • Reggae on the River
  • the Bootie anniversary party
  • my sister's badass band
  • the tragedy that befell a local drummer on the Fourth of July
  • my email interview with Dave-1 from Chromeo
  • my new obsession with electropop
  • Beyonce's famous fall
  • my favorite musical Dick
  • and Mexican's best recent import Kinky (oh how I love them).

For Pixel Vision, our culture blog, it's been:

  • heavy metal quilts
  • people who have fun for a living
  • the silliest vodka ever invented (yet)
  • the Monterey Pop Festival
  • places to get free booze
  • a stupid Debra Messing TV show
  • an awesomely unpretentious wine bar
  • the best bread ever
  • my Big Lebowski field trip
  • Peter and the Wolf composer Prokofiev
  • another magazine to make you feel bad about yourself
  • and a spa on wheels.

Again, that doesn't include all the blog posts written by someone else that I've assigned, edited, and/or posted, but I don't have the patience to go into them here. Just rest assured that I am earning my living doing something other than writing one story a month and checking my Myspace.

Weekly of the Week

So there's this blog tha t rates local weekly newspapers every week, giving the "Weekly of the Week" award to whichever one is most interesting ... or relevant... or, I don't know, good for some other reason. And this week, we got it, with this description:

Weekly of the Week: We were all set to give it to the Metro for a second week in a row, but the Guardian snuck up on us -- the Balazo story, plus all the descriptions of places to get Chinese breakfasts in downtown Oakland won us over! Plus: curse you, SFist Rain, for getting us addicted to America's Next Top Model!

Yay on us! Particularly since they mentioned a story in the FEAST supplement I edited. Yeeha!Feastbanner_2

It's my baby

Check it out, yo. My first big project for the Guardian. Yup, I ate and drank a whole lot. I wrote some shit. And I edited everything. Yes, it was fun. And exhausting. And scary. Now I'm going to go nurse my month-long hangover.

(BTW, please note the cover. It's what I like to call "Sports Illustrated: The Salad Issue.")

Molly en Guarde!

Wonder what it is, exactly, that I'm going to be doing up here at The Guardian ? Here's an idea of what I've done so far:

I've had my grubby little hands all over this food story, The Sex Issue, this dining review, Valentine's Day events, A whirlwind tour of strip clubs , and blogs about Bloody Marys, Sushi, and the Mother Jones party: writing, rewriting, checking for typos and style issues, writing headlines and/or captions, reformatting, reorganizing, and/or cutting for length.

Nope. This job doesn't suck.

My First Blog!

Well, my first one at my new job. Lookie here. Only six hours on the clock and I'm already e-published. Woohoo! (Not that this is my finest bit of blogging literature, but still...)

More on my move to come. Right now I have about seven thousand places to run off to. You know, big city life...
